Philosophy

Augie's is different from other coffeehouses. Our philosophy of business is "green" from our organic products to our benevolent use of our profits. A "double green business" is a benefit to everyone.

Profits
Augie's, Inc. dedicates its proceeds to the good of the community, to glorify God and spread His Love through contributing its profits to charitable works. Being a locally based business, Augie's commits 10% of its profits to local (Chico) charities which are not connected to St. Augustine's Church in any way. All other available proceeds, after taxes, go to charitable works as well. Although a church owns it, Augie's is not a church service, but rather a service to the people of Chico through a church.

Products
Augie's is the only downtown coffeehouse in Chico where 100% of our coffee products are organic, fair-traded, and shade-grown. Our teas are whole-leaf, freshly-brewed, and of the highest quality and variety. These factors make for both a great cup of your favorite drink, but keep our growers healthy and their farms economically stable.

Why organic coffee & tea?
The international coffee trade is the #2 commodity in the world marketplace. That's #2, under oil #1. There's power in the economy of coffee, and yet 100% of the world's coffee is grown in the tropics, in third world countries. The coffee farmers of these countries can't control their own industry's practices of using artificial fertilizers, herbicides & pesticides any more than they can dictate the going market prices. Huge national and corporate interests are in play here, and only if a buyer chooses to use only organic and fair-trade priced coffee beans will the grower be able to keep his family and environment safe and able to make a living growing our coffee. America is the #1 buyer of coffee in the world. We have a choice. And today, some of the best tasting high quality Arabica coffee is grown organically. Why does anyone want to sell anything else? We don't. We want to benefit the consumer and the supplier, so Augie's only serves organic, fair trade (or better) coffee beans. These are roasted by Pacific Bay Coffee, a California roaster who only sells organic, fair trade and mostly shade grown coffee. In this, we are helping our world. Using organic coffee is a simple extension of our personal beliefs that everything we do should help, rather than harm, the world in which we live.

Tea is much the same. You are probably familiar with the paper teabags filled with a fine dust of tea, and stapled to a string and tag. In the tea trade, this is the lowest grade tea to be found. At Augie's we sell only whole leaf, natural tea in silk bags sewn, not glued or stapled. All you taste is the world's finest tea.

Natural products

Augie's seeks to trade locally, so we use baked goods from Tin Roof Bakery, a fine Chico baker with tasty cookies, scones, muffins, kuchen & brownies. Come in and try some. We serve all-fruit smoothies, made by Dr. Smoothie, with no added sugar, just fruit puree, ice and milk (or soy, if you please). In our cold case are the finest products by R. W. Knudsen, Chico's famous all-fruit juice company. Augie's has individual servings of juices, Spritzers, and Natural Brew.

Augie's also serves nutritious sandwiches and wraps, salads, soups, cakes, cookies, pastries and other coffeehouse fare, locally purchased.

You have a choice

Here's a place, just one block from the Chico State University campus, where young men and women can meet in a welcoming, warm and safe environment. There is no pressure to drink alcohol. Quality food and beverages are offered at affordable prices. Located on property already dedicated to the Almighty, these young people are silently bathed in prayer and served with love, and some of the best coffee in town. But with no pressure to do anything but relax and enjoy it.

You're already going to buy coffee or tea, fruit smoothies, or whatever it is you like to drink. You need a good sandwich for lunch. A bagel with cream cheese. A light snack. You could go anywhere and buy junk food, do little to help yourself or anyone else.

Or you can come into Augie's, treat yourself to the Celtic decor, listen to baroque music masters, and savor the flavors we proudly present. And at the same time, know that your money is going to feed the hungry, house the poor, teach those in darkness, bring a little more light into Chico. Your choice.

There is nothing like this in Chico.

Please share the vision of Augie's with your family, friends, neighbors, fellow workers & students and give them the chance to enjoy it with you. We offer take out convenience, and group service with special pricing for handling orders for larger events. See our menu pamphlet, and ask about catering your next breakfast or lunch event.

"It's good to be here."
That's become our informal slogan. It is good to be in Augie's. And your presence makes it even better. Thanks for coming.

You will always be welcome.
